Mrs. J. McConnen Called by Death

Mrs. James McConnen, a life long resident of Wexford and Harpers Ferry, was called by death Saturday morning, Feb. 25, 1928, at 4 o'clock after an illness of about ten days during which time everything possible that medical skill and professional care was done for her.
Mrs. McConnen, whose maiden name was Mary Cassidy, was born Jan. 10, 1849, in County Mayo, Ireland, and came to this country May 18, 1866. She was united in marriage to James Mc Connen at Wexford Dec. 8, 1867. To this union were born seven children, four of whom, (Rose) Mrs. John Fitzsimmons of Milwaukee, Wis., Joseph of Kincorth, Sask., Canada, Frank of Superior, Wis., and Richard of Rickey, Mont., survive. Three children, Michael, Thomas and Wm. preceded her in death.
Her husband died when the children were small and most needed the guiding hand and paternal solicitude of a good Christian father, and Mrs. McConnen is deserving of much credit. Undismayed by the heavy cross placed upon her by the death of her husband, she braved the trials and hardships of those pioneer days, maintained her home, reared her children and saw them settled in life true to the principles of virtue and honesty which she inculcated into their young lives. She was an upright and God fearing Christian woman, never happier than when doing something for her family and friends. Though her duties in the days when her  children were small were numerous, she was ever cheerful and obliging, ever a true Christian character, ever kind and forgiving and ready to help those in misfortune. She found the greatest happiness and consolation in  her holy religion and faithfully served her God.
When the family were grown up and branched out to build up homes of their own, she moved to Harpers Ferry where she might be near the church and where she might spend the remaining days of her life in communion with her God. Daily she make use of this privilege and daily did she prepare her soul for the final summons. She died a happy death, comforted by the rites of her holy religion and went quietly with courage and strength to meet her God she served so faithfully during life.

Her funeral was held from St. Ann's church Monday morning. Rev. Father Nolan celebrated a Requiem High Mass at 9 o'clock and preached an eloquent and consoling sermon. Her remains were taken to Wexford and interred in the family [plot] beside her deceased loved ones. The casket bearers were John Brennan, John Riley, Amos Damon, John Clark, Mike Mullarkey and Mike Mack.
Those from a distance in attendance at the funeral were John Fitzsimmons and daughters Mae, Mrs. A. J. Wiehl and son William, of Milwaukee, Wis.
